Why God's Message Must Come with Power

What differentiated Jesus from the other prominent figures in his day or in Israel's history? First of all, it was his miracles.

His greatest miraculous sign was raising from the dead, which substantiated him as the Son of God. But before those, he did miracles in Israel, and these set him above and apart.

[John 15:24 NKJV] 24 "If I had not done among them the works which no one else did, they would have no sin; but now they have seen and also hated both Me and My Father.

It was prophesied that the Anointed King ("Messiah / Christ") would do various certain miracles. As he did, he was filling the shoes that only he could fill.

Now, when Jesus sent out those who he was training, he "gave them power and authority" (see Luke 10, Matthew 10, Mk 16, Mt 24). Why? Because this Message is a royal message from God almighty, and it must be delivered with power. It is distinct, and requires distinct signs, which God promised would accompany it. It is only fitting that this royal message from God almighty, sent to save dying humanity, would be announced with grand signs, miracles and wonders as with trumpet.

There are other things that differentiate Jesus from all religious leaders: his divine nature being the Son of God, his sacrificial love, his perfect obedience to the Father, and his Message—which is, itself, "the power of God to save all who believe" (Romans 1:16, The Bible). But what showed on the outside, to help people Identify and find their way to Him, was miracles.

Like every master-teacher, Jesus trained his students ("disciples") to do the same work as he did.

[Luke 6:40 NKJV] 40 "A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone who is perfectly trained will be like his teacher.

[John 14:12 NKJV] 12 "Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater [works] than these he will do, because I go to My Father.

By context, these "works" he spoke of here were clearly miracles. And we see his disciples, and others they trained, continuing to work the same miracles that he did after he left. According to Matthew 28:18-20, this applies equally to us also.

Now, what were the "greater works" than Jesus did, that were left for us to do? In my book, "Heal the Sick," I cover this. The "greater works" are leading people into the new birth and also into the immersion in the Holy Spirit. Jesus never did these two things, and indeed, they are greater than miracles of a physical nature.

But for my traditional religious background readers, notice: he never removed the lesser works. He never downplayed their importance, or suggested they weren't necessary, not even once. Instead, he did them, trained others to do them, and commanded we do them.

[Matthew 10:7-8 NKJV] 7 "And as you go, preach, saying, 'The kingdom of heaven is at hand.' 8 "Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out demons. Freely you have received, freely give. —Jesus

Paul shared about his approach:

[1Corinthians 2:1-5 ESV] 1 And I, when I came to you, brothers, did not come proclaiming to you the testimony of God with lofty speech or wisdom. 2 For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus [the Anointed King] and him crucified. 3 And I was with you in weakness and in fear and much trembling, 4 and my speech and my message were not in plausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, 5 so that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men but in the power of God. [Emphasis mine].

Some of us, by God's favor and necessary help, have figured out from Scripture how we are to do these things. And we do them continually and train others also. Because the Message must get out to the whole world, and it must be accompanied with power.

In all cases in Scripture, whenever Jesus sent anyone out to proclaim the Gospel Message, he always gave them power and authority to perform signs. This includes the Great Commission, given to take the Message to the end of the earth till the end of the age. This is still as relevant for us as the moment the fiery words left the King's mouth.
